Nailsea has benefited from major industrial investment, having previously been a coal mining area. The town is also famous for its glassworks. The town's population dropped in the mid-19th Century but has been growing gradually ever since. Today the combined population of Nailsea and nearby Backwell is approximately 23,000.

Nailsea town centre is situated about 5 miles inland of Junction 20 of the M5 and is conveniently placed for access to Bristol International Airport, which is just a 15-minute journey away. The M5 provides a direct link to Birmingham, the North West and South West. In addition, the M4 motorway, only 6 miles from Nailsea, provides a quick and direct route to London and South Wales.

Nailsea has benefited over the years from its broad industrial base, with companies such as Vetco Gray (formally ABB Offshore Systems) and Brabantia committed to the town. Vetco Gray has expanded tenfold over the last decade. As well as this, Tesco has developed an area of 2.2 hectares providing a supermarket totalling 20,063 square feet, which employs over 100 people.

The town also has a modern comprehensive school, which at the beginning of 2007 provided education for 1,365 pupils including a sixth form college. The school has seen better results at GCSE level than the UK average.
